House Tour: Living Room

Alrighty gang. Today we are going to get our house tour on, beginning with the living room. This room is right off the entrance and is pretty much the first thing you see when you come in our house. For the first year of our time here, it was either empty or the island for misfit furniture. Not a happy scenario. So a few months ago we geared up to focus some time, energy, and budget on this baby and this is what we've come up with (so far..)

We wanted this room to be comfy and relaxing, a place where we could bring people to hang out for a few minutes when they stop by. On the other hand, we don't have enough space to dedicate an entire room to entertaining.. it needs to work for us when we don't have company too. That's when we decided to build the wall to wall desk to house our computer, printer, and all that other fun stuff.

For the gallery wall, I wanted to create something that the computer could blend into. I realize I'm not fooling anyone, obviously it's a screen. But I don't think it takes away from the room now that it's worked into the color scheme and collage. Eventually we have plans to get a more streamlined monitor with a flush mount, but for now that remains in the "someday" category.

Most of the artwork is done by yours truly (i.e. CHEAP ART!) but one of my favorite pieces was done by one of my husband's buddies, Erik. It's a scratchboard drawing of Hyrum playing football in high school, and was originally featured in the local newspaper. He's a really talented artist, if you want to see more of his work go here.

I bought the fabric for the curtains from Ikea and then sewed them myself. I decided to go with the puddled because I wanted the room to look finished but stay pretty casual.

Ah, the bookshelves. I love books. Have any good reading recommendations for me? I'm always looking for new ones!

This gold plate was my grandma's, I inherited it when she passed away. It always sat on her coffee table, usually holding candy! It tends to float around my house because I like it everywhere, but right now it's hanging out in the living room.

Well, that's (every possible angle of) the living room. What do you think? Anyone else been working on their living room lately? I'd love to see what you're up to!

  1. Did you make the wood look old like this? or is it reclaimed? I love stuff like this. My dream is to find an old door from a farmhouse and make it into a coffee table or something. Very cool.

  2. All of this took you guys a few MONTHS?! Awesome!!! Ok I'm completely 100% obsessed with everything, but probably especially those curtains! Love the font used, too! And I knew you did the artwork of that beautiful lady before you even said it ;) I miss you my talented, beautiful, down-to-earth, and perfect friend. <3

  4. Preveena, thank you! You're right, the best part about the desk is that it gives us SO much work space without really taking up any useable space!

  5. Love, love LOVE this! This is the exact type of wall-to-wall desk that I was looking to make in our soon-to-be office/JAM room. So excited to have seen one made!

  6. So I just found your blog yesterday, and have been working my way around it. I LOVE your slow decorating style. Your living room is awesome, looks comfy and lived-in, but still so wonderfully put together. Also, maybe its because my baby had me up all night, but I really did not notice that that was a computer screen mounted on the wall! Good idea!
